That link talks about the equally unstable Monica Conyers. She's a real loose cannon, and could also prove to be an embarrassment, and the fact that she's the wife of John Conyers just makes it that much worse. And there could easily be more. These are just two people in one city, undoubtedly more inconvenient friendships could come to the fore in Detroit. Then you have to look at the rest, Philly, NY, LA, and pretty much every other big city.
The problem is less about big city corruption as it is about how openly and stupidly corrupt and reckless they are, and Kilpatrick and Conyers are among the worst in Detroit. I think that "I'm not really bothered as much by (certain poor conduct) as I am that you violate said rules like no one is going to call you on your bullshit" factor comes into play. I'll be curious what sort of embarrassing political connections surface in Chicago. Wright and Pfleger are political forces, but I'm thinking in terms of traditional political figures.

Having already sown up the Democratic nomination, re-designed the presidential seal, re-designed the White House's decor and facilities, had his first foreign tour, and won re-election to the White House, Barack Obama is now setting out for a vacation in Hawaii, and it's got some Democrats worried:
Although he has run what is widely acclaimed to be one of the most impressive campaigns in years, Democrats live in fear of Mr Obama falling prey to the kinds of accident that derailed predecessors in earlier cycles.[...]
In a piece of footage endlessly recycled to mock his supposed elitism and even foreignness, Mr Kerry was caught on camera windsurfing off Massachusetts. Since Mr Obama is taking his holiday at a private beach house in Hawaii, surrounded by the secret service, campaign officials worry less about his exposure to the paparazzi. Besides, they say, most Americans will be tuned into the Olympics.
“During the middle of a campaign you are always worried about taking some time off – that’s the nature of the job,†Mr Obama told reporters this week. “But you know I have been going pretty much straight for 18 months now.â€
Eh, they shouldn't worry so much. They should, however, make sure they ship a teleprompter handy at the beach. Ya know. Just in case.

The most powerful woman in the history of American politics is suffering a humiliating defeat at the nation's bookstores, sales figures show. And what was the cause of this "total failure," to borrow a phrase Queen Nan has used?
In her first week at market, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi sold just 2,737 copies of her book KNOW YOUR POWER, according to NIELSEN BOOKSCAN.
"The speaker was pre-occupied with house business last week," a source close to Pelosi explained Thursday morning.Ah. A ha. A ha ha. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You've got to be fucking kidding me!

He was at some sort of "Stop AIDS" conference in Africa when he dropped this doozy:
Look, I actually agree with the message Slick Willy was promoting. Sticking your Little Man in every orifice around without regard for where said orifice has been is a good way to stop AIDS from spreading. But hearing a serial adulterer promote monogamy is like me promoting the virtues of melanin and a caffeine free lifestyle.
This is amazing. I guess Jena Jameson was unavailable to speak to the crowd.

These people may well exert real influence on a hypothetical Obama administration. This would set a very dangerous precedent in American politics, a series of show trials after every change of power would cause incredible damage and instability.

Possible Obama vice president and Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia appeared on CNN today. According to Jim Geraghty, his performance was, well... Let's just say as someone who lived in Virginia throughout most of his administration, nothing about his performance surprises me. A taste (links in the original):
Kaine must have been busy in Richmond at the time, because there was not a consensus that would work in Washington. Some folks were saying, "We can send 15,000 more troops; 20,000 more troops; 30,000 more troops. I don't know any, uh, expert on the region or any military officer that I've spoken to privately that believes that that is gonna make a substantial difference on the situation on the ground." Some folks like Barack Obama, for example.
He says McCain has never told Americans "what victory would look like." Indeed, it's hidden on McCain's web site, written in secret codes like, "The best way to secure long-term peace and security is to establish a stable, prosperous, and democratic state in Iraq that poses no threat to its neighbors and contributes to the defeat of terrorists. When Iraqi forces can safeguard their own country, American troops can return home."
Exactly what one would expect from a mediocre governor who rode his predecessor's coattails into office.

It is highly unlikely that Bush will grant Gutierrez’s request for a moratorium on immigration raids until a better solution is in place.Ah, the reality-based community. Gotta love 'em.
“You know who is in charge now? The Gestapo agents at [the Department of] Homeland Security. They are in charge,†Gutierrez said. “I think it is election season, and they have decided it did not work for us one way [with comprehensive reform], so let’s try to exploit it politically another way†through harsh enforcement.

Perhaps we should just start a list of what is acceptable, since it appears it may become a shorter list.

This is a man with no sense of humor whatsoever.

If you click on the link, you can look at a story from the Los Angeles Times talking about the disappearance of the reporter, who was doing a series on freedom of speech (can't have that, can we?) and who wrote a book about his experiences as a soldier in Iraq called "Third Time's The Charm" about how many tours of duty it took before he "'woke the [expletive] up' and realized how wrong the Iraq conflict was". Oooh...subversive. There's another article about how "extremist" organizations like the ACLU and (yes, really) the Huffington Post are opposed to new helmet cameras that the thuggish soldiers are using on behalf of Homeland Security. Footage from the helmet cams, which at one point shows laughing soldiers tormenting a drunk woman out in the street, makes up part of the video record of what went wrong, as does video taken by protagonist "Sara Ford," who seems to enjoy prancing about in her underwear (which is enjoyable) when she's not being menaced by soldiers who tell her not to tape things in public because (and I paraphrase) of "Homeland Security" and because "nobody wants to see what's going on" in L.A. under martial law.
There are also clips of teevee interviews where a journalist is silenced after asking the Homeland Security Secretary if we are "in the midst of a coup"—the network later breaks in and apologizes for the interviewer asking questions that are "divisive" before giving lip service to an apparently government-approved slogan, "KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE, AMERICA!"
Etc.
Is it just me, or are these people completely invested in the idea that Bush is a fascist and that only brave truth-tellers like them can save the country? I wonder, what's going to happen when he leaves the White House in January and life goes on as it always has? I mean, they're almost going to be disappointed, aren't they?
By the way: I didn't bother looking at the comments for most of the You Tube episodes, but the comments on episode five are a lot of fun.
Update: Our heroine, in the next few episodes, meets up with some AWOL soldiers, one of whom seems to have been driven insane by his combat mission. Pretty original.
And I didn't mention it before, but the "news" updates are now being provided by HNS, the "Homeland News Services" network, which has military personnel on the air, reading news. Wake up, sheeple, or this is what's going to happen!
