That was a significant drop since 2003, when 601 people were killed.
Sadder still? The paper quotes that twat Michael Pfleger.

“As a wife and mother, Patricia Blagojevich brings firsthand experience and personal commitment to her strong advocacy on behalf of the women and children of Illinois. As First Lady, she works hard to promote initiatives that will help the families of Illinois bring up happy, healthy, and successful children.â€
Via Drew and the Eggman, covering the US Attorney press conference addressing the arrest of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich (D-ullard),
The government says he wanted a $50K kickback from the CEO of a children's hospital that received state money. When the kickback didn't show up, he tried to have the funding pulled from the hospital. When reached for comment, Governor Blagojevich simply stated that he was quote, "Shaking down a children's hospital, for the children." Seriously dude, shaking down a children's hospital? You sick fuck.Classy guy.

I guess that love lasted as long as an encounter between Oliver Willis and a Filet O Fish.
Vanessa Niekamp, an administrator for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services' Office of Child Support and a 15-year state employee, said that when Deputy Director Doug Thompson came into her office, "He appeared very upset, his neck was bright red, and he was shaking. He closed my door."
Thompson told her she must write an e-mail to the agency's information-security officer, and then "dictated word for word" what she wrote, Niekamp said. He also reminded her that she could be fired at any time, she said.
"Within an hour, I took the rest of the day off -- again using my vacation time -- and went directly to the office of the inspector general. I told them everything I knew about what happened."
Niekamp took another day of vacation yesterday to testify before the House State Government and Elections Committee about legislation that calls for the firing of any unclassified state employee who improperly accesses confidential personal information.
Rep. Shannon Jones, a Springboro Republican sponsoring House Bill 648, said she introduced the measure because she thinks that high-ranking officials such as Job and Family Services Director Helen Jones-Kelley weren't punished enough.
"The systematic misuse of government databases and the governor's woeful under-reaction to state government workers engaging in this outrageous behavior make House Bill 648 necessary," she told the committee.
Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat, placed Jones-Kelley on a one-month unpaid suspension last month after Inspector General Thomas P. Charles found she authorized the check on Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, aka Joe the Plumber, for no legitimate government purpose.
Thompson also was suspended for a month after Charles found that he participated in directing the check and instructed Niekamp to send a deceptive e-mail about it. Three others received lesser punishment.

A woman who worked for Al Franken earlier this week during the Senate recount in one county ended up counting ballots as a nonpartisan volunteer here Saturday in a recount that grew heated at times.Maggie Vertin, who spent two days in Fergus Falls for Otter Tail County’s recount as an observer for Franken, was one of eight volunteers who assisted with the Wilkin County effort in Breckenridge.
Bob Westfall, who was in Breckenridge on Saturday as an observer for Norm Coleman, said he had concerns when members of his team learned a ballot counter had worked for Franken.

Exit question: How quickly would there have been a Narrative about creeping fascism if a public school had been renamed George W. Bush Elementary on November 21, 2000?

Catherine Vogt, 14, is an Illinois 8th grader, the daughter of a liberal mom and a conservative dad. She wanted to conduct an experiment in political tolerance and diversity of opinion at her school in the liberal suburb of Oak Park. Can we assume that it gets worse from there? Yes We Can! Read the whole damn thing.
She noticed that fellow students at Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School overwhelmingly supported Barack Obama for president. His campaign kept preaching "inclusion," and she decided to see how included she could be.
So just before the election, Catherine consulted with her history teacher, then bravely wore a unique T-shirt to school and recorded the comments of teachers and students in her journal. The T-shirt bore the simple yet quite subversive words drawn with a red marker:
"McCain Girl."
"I was just really curious how they'd react to something that different, because a lot of people at my school wore Obama shirts and they are big Obama supporters," Catherine told us. "I just really wanted to see what their reaction would be."
Immediately, Catherine learned she was stupid for wearing a shirt with Republican John McCain's name. Not merely stupid. Very stupid.
"People were upset. But they started saying things, calling me very stupid, telling me my shirt was stupid and I shouldn't be wearing it," Catherine said.
You know, we've been told over and over and over again by the punditocracy that Barack Obama was the post-partisan candidate (now, our post-partisan President-elect, yay!) who was going to unite us all in a new era of Hope and Change, but somehow, time after time, we've been treated to examples of how rabidly partisan and, frankly, uninterested in unity his cult-like followers are. Even, apparently, those who aren't even old enough to vote.
Funny, that. It's like they didn't get the message.

One story, more than any other, sums up the intensity, loyalty and, at times, downright nastiness upon which Mr Emanuel's reputation is built.Hope. Change. The kind of stuff you see in movies about the Mafia. Yeah. We've got nothing to worry about. At a dinner to celebrate President Clinton's first election victory, Mr Emanuel began to name those who he believed had earned his enmity. As he listed the names of those he saw as traitors, he grabbed a steak knife, stood up and began plunging the knife into the table and shouting "Dead! Dead! Dead!" after each name.
"When he was done, the table looked like a lunar landscape," one witness recalled. "It was like something out of The Godfather. But that's Rahm for you."
Nor was this an isolated incident – one pollster who fell out with Mr Emanuel received a rotting fish in the post as a warning not to cross him again.

When Republican campaign volunteer Jean Taylor came to open up the Yolo County Republican Headquarters Friday morning, she was greeted by the sight of a broken window. Now, that's where you're wrong, Ms. Taylor. This election is all about Hope! And Change! And Hopeychanginess! You must be some kind of bitter clinger or something. And a racist, too.Overnight, an unidentified vandal threw what looked like a lead flower pot through the lower half of the glass window.
Kirby Wells, of the Yolo County Republican Central Committee, said the committee has contacted the Woodland Police Department. Because the window was broken with a flower pot, he said the police are hoping to find fingerprints on it.
The owner of the building has called to get the window replaced, but Taylor was told that it won't be fixed until Wednesday, the day after the election.
For Taylor, this is the culmination of months worth of rude phone calls, sign stealing and vandalism against members of the Republican Party.
"I've been through every election since Eisenhower in '56," Taylor said. "This is a very angry election."
Probably.

Malkin has been following these types of abuses for a while, while Jonn Lilyea has a report of nursing home staff filling out voting ballots for a man with severe dementia in Ohio. Read the report, the man has no idea who or what he was voting for, and the family had him declared incapable of voting by the courts because of his medical condition years ago.

According to the storyline that drives many advocacy groups and Democratic activists - a storyline often reflected in comments on this blog - we are up against a sharply partisan, radically conservative, take-no-prisoners Republican party. They have beaten us twice by energizing their base with red meat rhetoric and single-minded devotion and discipline to their agenda. In order to beat them, it is necessary for Democrats to get some backbone, give as good as they get, brook no compromise, drive out Democrats who are interested in “appeasing†the right wing, and enforce a more clearly progressive agenda. But don't you worry! Obama is still a centrist Democrat who loves tax cuts and rainbows and lollipops and puppies! And tolerance, can't leave out that! The dude loves him some tolerance. Just look at the type of rhetoric he will use to bring the country together (emphasis mine):
The country, finally knowing what we stand for and seeing a sharp contrast, will rally to our side and thereby usher in a new progressive era.
I am not drawing a facile equivalence here between progressive advocacy groups and right-wing advocacy groups. The consequences of their ideas are vastly different. Fighting on behalf of the poor and the vulnerable is not the same as fighting for homophobia and Halliburton. Why, the way he captures and surrounds a story! Truly He is the Son of God!
Make sure you go read the whole thing. I want to comment further on this, but I have to go string up some of them thar queermosexuals and cash in my blood-for-oil money from my masters at Halliburton.
