Hollywood leads the way

I was reading this article on Obama and celebrities and what their relationship may be like, and this bit jumped out at me:

“The more active Hollywood becomes, the more active the public will be,” said Phil Viardo, a Los Angeles-based agent and producer. “Hollywood is a huge motivating factor. One thing is undeniable: People can say all they want about Hollywood’s opinion, but the majority of Americans look up to and listen to celebrities.”
I don't know about that, Phil. Lots of people like reading about celebrities or watching celebrity news (especially when said celebrities are getting knocked down a peg for doing something stupid) but when was the last time you (and I'm not talking to Phil here anymore) heard someone say something to the effect of "Gee, I wish [insert celebrity name] would talk more about politics"?

On the other hand, there are a lot of stupid people out there (somewhere around, oh, say, 52% of the public) so Phil might be on to something.
