Helpful Tips for the Media

News: "But some critics fear the Large Hadron Collider could exceed physicists' wildest conjectures: Will it spawn a black hole that could swallow Earth?

Or spit out particles that could turn the planet into a hot dead clump?

Yes."

Not News:  Ridiculous, say scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known by its French initials CERN -- some of whom have been working for a generation on the $5.8 billion collider, or LHC.

"Obviously, the world will not end when the LHC switches on," said project leader Lyn Evans.

This has been a public service to the Mainstream Media.  Let it never be said that I don't take pity on the IQ-lowering effects of J-School.

Guess ! That! Party! Culture of Corruption Style!

Stashiu sends these along.  The current mayor of Baltimore is being investigated for possibly accepting gifts from a developer that she supported special tax breaks and zoning changes for during her time as head of the Baltimore city council.  The mayor claims that the developer gave her the gifts as part of a relationship, both were in the middle of separations.  She may face perjury charges for not reporting the gifts, she and the developer went on several vacations together, and the mayor was given a $2000 gift certificate to go a furrier paid with the developer's company credit,

The furrier's owner, Richard Swartz, told prosecutors he remembered "a guy coming into the store and [he] requested that no name [be] put on the certificate." The certificate was purchased with a Lowe's Platinum Visa card that investigators traced back to Doracon after subpoenaing the firm's bank records.

There's plenty more details in the article, but there's a taste of it.  The article itself never mentions that the mayor of Baltimore is a Democrat, you can find out that she is a Democrat by clicking her name, and it'll send you to a profile of her, but never in the article.  Stash also sends another story along where her party is never mentioned.  Funny how that works.

Ambience is Everything

I found this story about John McCain’s VP search coordinator hilarious.  Not so much for the story itself, but for the hard work that went into forging an atmosphere of secrecy and back-door dealings to make you scared of the eventual selection.

So let’s just take this story to its ultimate denouement, shall we?  Because I hate things that are half-done.

I've stuck a much better rewrite below the fold.

Og get job with wire service

I've heard of an unfrozen caveman lawyer, but an unfrozen caveman journalist? It looks like the a certain news organization has one on staff:

Lincoln police arrest a 49-year-old man accused of firing a crossbow at his neighbor. Officer Katie Flood said the man got into an argument with his 25-year-old neighbor about the breed of the neighbor's dog Saturday evening. The owner said the dog was a pit bull, but older man said it was a Labrador.

Wiki editor suspended or fired for scooping NBC on Russert death

The Wiki editor was a lower level employee of Internet Broadcasting Services, which provides internet service for media companies, and said the editor thought that the news was out and common knowledge.  IBS has since canned or suspended the employee.  An NBC staffer went in and scrubbed Russert's wiki entry of the information of his death quickly.  I dunno, unless he was told not to leak it, firing or suspending this person seems excessive.

Sectarian Barbarian Carrion: Media Pines For Good Ol' Days

Total US deaths in Iraq --- down.

IED deaths --- down.

TV news coverage --- down.

And the vulture media weeps:

CBS News no longer stations a single full-time correspondent in Iraq, where some 150,000 United States troops are deployed.

Paul Friedman, a senior vice president at CBS News, said the news division does not get reports from Iraq on television “with enough frequency to justify keeping a very, very large bureau in Baghdad.”

“It’s terrible,” [CBS correspondent] Ms. Logan said in the telephone interview. She called it a financial decision. “We can’t afford to maintain operations in Iraq and Afghanistan at the same time,” she said. “It’s so expensive and the security risks are so great that it’s prohibitive.”

Oh, they're going to get letters

I'm not sure why, but I get GQ in the mail, even though I canceled my subscription years ago. Actually, I'm not really sure why I ever subscribed to the magazine in the first place.  I'm not much of a clothes horse (I only wear suits to weddings and funerals) and I couldn't afford the stuff they feature anyway.

Also, for a conservative guy like me, their political coverage is cringe-worthy. It's a Manhattan-based mag written by urban liberals, after all, so there's not a lot of love thrown our way. In their "Informed Man's Guide to Following the Election," for example, the blog coverage they suggest you follow includes Eric Alterman, Talking Points Memo, and token "conservative" Excitable Andy. Yeah.  [Correction: Looking deeper into the article, they also mention Instaglenn, The Corner, and Campaign Spot.  They also note that Sullivan is an "Obamaphile."  My bad.]

So why am I writing about this? Well, one part of the magazine I generally enjoy is Tom Carson's movies and teevee column, "The Critic." This month's column (I looked for it online, but couldn't find it) is about Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann. Now, Carson is a liberal, and while he likes MSNBC and hates Fox, he finds faults with both Matthews and Olbermann, especially the latter.

But Carson really stepped in it this month, almost certainly without knowing that he would. Talking about Matthews, he writes:

He's the only cable news heavyweight who's defined by what he loves instead of what he hates. SNL, which should have bigger fish to fry—namely, Tim Russert, a far more egregious Beltway clown—never tires of spoofing his egomania...
[my emphasis]

Talk about bad timing. He surely wrote the column, and the magazine surely went to the presses, before Russert died, but he's going to have to issue a ton of apologies for that one.

Speaking of FAIL...

NBC News had the chance to have their next "Meet the Press" host follow in the footsteps of Tim Russert.  It seems they are declining to take that opportunity:

At least for this Sunday, top NBC anchorman Brian Williams will be taking Tim Russert's place on "Meet the Press."

[...]

NBC News reporters David Gregory and Andrea Mitchell are considered possible permanent replacements, along with "Hardball" host Chris Matthews.

If NBC News was smart (big "if," I know) they would try to poach Jake Tapper from ABC News.  I find him to be one of the most evenhanded journalists out there today and I think he would have been a great addition.

Angry Obama Supporters Storm WSJ Offices

A protest by angry Barack Obama supporters erupted into violence this morning as demonstrators stormed the offices of The Wall Street Journal and overturned two cars in the street.  Riot police were on hand but unable to prevent the damage.  No arrests have yet been reported.

The protestors, organized by the Guardian Council of the Organization for the Reverential Election of Obama (OREO), were demonstrating against the Journal for its continuing practice of running a drawing of Barack Obama instead of a photograph of the candidate, which is forbidden under OREO law.

This could be fun!

You know, I agree with Vinty that if we're going to have to economize on what we use from AP stories, we'd better find the most important news nuggets we can in the fewest words.

That said, I was shocked by a quote from Obama adviser Richard Clarke which I found in this article:

"I'm[...]disgusted by[...]Americans."
Pretty scathing, huh? I wonder, what could have possibly driven Clarke to such naked hatred of his own countrymen?

Startling news about Barack Obama!!

From the Associated Press:

Obama [...] is [...] frankly [...] indefensible.
I know, I know. I'm shocked that they acknowledged the truth, too.

(Actually, while worth a read, the article doesn't really say that. But if I'm going to have to pay the AP $2.50 if I use 5 or more words, then I am just gonna have to pick the four I like the most and run with 'em.)

No disguise for that double standard

Yes, I've already punched myself for making a Foreigner reference in the title so you don't have to.  I'm helpful like that.

Anyway, you might have heard about the AP crackdown on a site called the Drudge Retort, which is a liberal goof on, obviously, the Drudge Report.

In response, sites everywhere threw a shitfit, culminating in Techcrunch declaring they'd be boycotting AP, and even the New York Times declaring that the AP was being excessive.  The AP now seems to be backtracking a bit.  All well and good, and the response from Techcrunch, the NYT and other places are what one would expect.  Just one thing though, where was Techcrunch and NYT when the AP decided to go after our friend Brian at Snapped Shot?

They were silent, of course, seems the problem isn't so much AP's aggression as it is who it is aggressive with.  Brian has been watching this unfold, and has a post up and an article at Pajamas Media looking at the situation.  Do check them out.

The media are shocked, shocked!

Rich Lowry notes in passing that liberal punditry are upset with upstaging the Obamessiah's special night last Tuesday by scheduling a speech that night in New York City.

The thing about the Clinton's is that they are entirely predictable.  Any conservative could have told them to expect this, because Bill Clinton did it, too:

Although ex-presidents traditionally make a quiet exit from Washington to leave the stage to their successors, Clinton reminisced in public during an emotional farewell ceremony.

[...]

A welcoming ceremony was planned for Clinton's arrival in New York before heading to his new home in Chappaqua, New York.
I wonder what the punditry thought about that typically classy Clinton move.  Let's find out:
WOODRUFF: And I think, is this the first time a former president has spent two hours and 45 minutes in Washington after he was no longer president?

JEFF GREENFIELD, CNN SENIOR ANALYST: I think that's a record that's (inaudible)...

WOODRUFF: Immediately.

GREENFIELD: ... likely to stand for some time.

That's odd.  They seem to be all right with this keystone Clinton trait when it's not cutting into Barack Obama's day.

Stop The Presses!!

Dylan Backs Obama!!
Why? Why do rock stars, actors, or artists of any kind think we don't know they're gonna vote Democrat? Hey assholes, WE KNOW. We know. What do you want, a cookie for being an "activist"?

Dylan's endorsement contains much symbolic significance. The legendary singer-songwriter, who has an art exhibition opening in London next week, became a focal point for young people worldwide when he released the album 'The times they are a-changin'," including the famous song of that name, in 1964.

Much symbolic significance? To who? Old Hippies? Jann Wenner? (hope you kids get that one) Other senile rock stars? Matt Damon? I doubt almost any one under 30 even knows who Bob Dylan is.
"But we've got this guy out there now who is redefining the nature of politics from the ground up...Barack Obama.

What? "Redefining the nature of politics" What does that even mean? Did you guys know the nature of politics have been redefined? Seems like the same old crap to me, but then again, I never "got" Dylan.

media: lack of professionalism ok when propagandizing against republicans

Via Hotair Headlines, we get this article about Dana Rohrabacher stating that putting a pair of women's panties on some jihadi detainee's head isn't torture.

"You're suggesting that the behavior of, what, panties on his head ... is unacceptable interrogation technique for a man who was involved in a conspiracy to kill tens of thousands of Americans?" Rohrabacher asked during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing.

Fine, okay, but then there is this,

An exasperated Rep. Bill Delahunt, D-Mass., reminded Rohrabacher that interrogators were also seen physically abusing detainees.

But were they?  Once again, we go to back to Stashiu's interview with Patterico.  Stash was an Army nurse deeply involved with Guantanamo, and said he saw no torture or physical abuse of detainees.  So instead of saying something like "Delahunt (D-MA) pointed out that there were allegations of physical abuse", they simply report that physical abuse happened.

But the best part of this disaster of an article?  Check this out,

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x73/doubleplusundeadmeenu/mediafail.jpg
Prostitution rings? In my apartment?  It's more likely than you think.

So, we have a picture of Rohrabacher (as portrayed by Barney Frank)  rejecting the notion that putting women's panties on some jihadi's head is torture, and the media titles their article declaring that Rohrabacher supports torture.  What a bunch of twats.
