Oh My God, This must be stopped! Captain America is to be a USO performer

director Joe Johnston and the team at Marvel Studios have a plan for "The First Avenger: Captain America," which is due in Summer 2011: They've added a new wrinkle to the classic mythology to explain why a scientifically enhanced super-soldier would venture out in the WWII battlefields in a costume that leans a bit heavy on the old Betsy Ross imagery.

"The costume is a flag, but the way we're getting around that is we have Steve Rogers forced into the USO circuit. After he's made into this super-soldier, they decide they can't send him into combat and risk him getting killed. He's the only one and they can't make more. So they say, 'You're going to be in this USO show' and they give him a flag suit. He can't wait to get out of it."

You have to be fucking kidding me! What kind of fucktard even dreams this shit up?

This demands a boycott! Tell your friends make it clear that we want Captain America as he was meant to be a Soldier by Christ. Not a USO performer. (Not that there is anything wrong with the USO but come on...).

2 Sounds like there is a little more to the story than that. I can live with what they have, as long as Matt freakin Damon isn't cast as Steve Rogers.

3 Yeah, I kinda like how they're going about this, but if Matt Damon (is this even rumored?!) is cast as CA, I'll be as vociferous as Chad in my denunciations.

4 Like I said over a Big Hollywood-- IF they handle this right, it might work. If HIS response to becoming a supersoldier and being stuck on a USO show is kind of like YOUR response, and they get, say, the Ironman folks to write it...it could work.

It starts out that way and then he comes around to realizing the power of the symbolism and comes to accept it--what is wrong w/ that?! To me, that sounds like a really good parable for how a lot of liberals have gone from left to right where they started out scorning American and, in time, came to love it when they realized that what they were standing against was actually a force for great good in the world.

Also, if this got your blood boiling, this should vaporize it:

6 Chad, I don't think you read the whole shtick-- he's pissed BECAUSE they stuck him in the USO when they realized they couldn't make any more, and didn't want to risk him being killed. It's the kind of idiot-ball thing that's just barely believable.....

7 At least it's still the American flag.

8 Chad- Red-white-and-blue spandex with floppy boots, a projectile shield and wing-ears isn't exactly standard issue; it looks like exactly what it is-- a costume. You hand that to some random guy in the field and tell him it's his outfit, and I don't care if you chose the world's best Marine-- he'll laugh. This just isn't easy to pull off, cold, and trying to do so would be campy. In the comic book format, it's perfectly normal-- like Wolverine's yellow outfit. Stuff just WORKS in comics. In movie format, it has to be explained for an origin story-- same as they did with Spiderman's outfit, and as they avoided doing with Wolverine and the Black Leather Brigade. how does a USO costume enable him to lead? It doesn't, in and of itself. It just makes him very easy to recognize. The traits he got from the Super Soldier program let him lead-- and the USO stuff makes sure that EVERYONE knows he's a dang good soldier. Origin movies have to answer "why?" in a way that the audience will accept. Goal: have The Captain, following the same basic story as his actual origin, end up in a costume that at the very least keeps with the essence of his original. Problem: it ain't a uniform. It takes a LOT to pull off a flag costume without looking silly, and that's before you get to the floppy boots, big gloves, head-wings and shield. Solution: make it all symbolic, make him annoyed not to be in an actual uniform, then make him realize the value of the symbolism.

9 ....what happened to my paragraphs!?!?!?

10 hrumph...maybe they would dig up the Kinks song "Stop me now I'm falling"...

I grew up reading comic books in the 70's and 80's - the 90's were so bad for all the old heroes because they always had to "reinvent" and throw away the past 20, 30, 40 years of history and stories.

This just doesn't surprise me anymore...Spider-man and Iron man movies did surprise me with how good they were...X-Men, Daredevil, Blade, Wolverine, etc are really the norm - this sounds like it will fit the mold.

It's just sad to see how what I grew up on is ignored....so many good stories and villains just forgotten (Looking through some newer stories since I stopped reading in the early 90's Red Skull and Baron Zemo were Nazis hell bent on taking over the world to taking over large corporations and acting very "Republican-like" instead of unbalanced world destroyers/conquers).
